Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life: Volume 1 by Carole P. Roman is an adventure story that revolves around Captain No Beard who lived on a small island with Mongo the mast-climbing monkey, Linus the loud-mouthed lion, Fribbet the floppy frog, and of course Hallie, his first mate and cousin. They sailed on his ship, The Flying Dragon. Every morning Captain No Beard gave instructions to his crew members and that particular day they decided to sail south. Captain No Beard saw a big white cloud and understood that a storm was brewing. Looking at the rumbling sky and gray waves lapping at the sides of the ship, Captain No Beard realized that it was not easy being a captain.

I like the way the story captures the adventure on the high seas and how the crew of The Flying Dragon handles the storm. I like stories with a nautical theme and this book is an enjoyable read. The illustrations are fascinating and they give a good pace and movement to the story and make the scenes vivid. All the characters aboard the ship are lovable and readers will want to be on The Flying Dragon with all the interesting characters. ‘Shiver me timbers’ can become a favorite catchphrase while playing pirates! The presence of the mermaid adds to the whimsicality of the story along with the adventure. The storyline is interesting and entertaining. Readers will be waiting for the next volumes to learn more about the adventures of Captain No Beard and his crew!
