Richard Cutler’s Carbon Neutral follows Admiral Neil Dodson, who commands four enormous colony ships on a thirteen-year voyage from humanity’s first settlement outside the solar system to Tau Ceti. His crew must locate a habitable planet and build a wormhole Gate that will connect the new colony to Earth. On Earth, Charm-E-Ine, an ancient guardian living among humans, helps form the Union of African Nations and supports its plan to build a starship of its own. Neil’s expedition changes when the fleet reaches a world already governed by intelligent inhabitants. Establishing a colony now requires permission from the planet’s inhabitants, while the Russian vessel’s secret agenda threatens the agreement. As Africa prepares to join the mission, Neil must decide how humanity can settle on another world while respecting the life already there.
Richard Cutler’s Carbon Neutral is brilliant science fiction, and Cutler makes this massive future easy to picture. The character writing is fantastic, and I have two favorites. Lillian Westgate, the science officer aboard the American ship, can settle an argumentative meeting by leaning forward and summarizing what everyone has said, giving her persona the ultimate nod to quiet power. The other is Raman, a traveler rescued after three thousand years in suspended animation, and his displacement links the colony's mission to humanity’s distant past. The technology is huge, but the best of the best happens to be the smallest: tiny alien pilots that carry human excavators above a forest in an insect-shaped craft. Carbon Neutral is the second book in the Course Correction series, but it is so easy to follow and so immersive that it absolutely reads as a standalone. That said, what a shame it would be for readers to miss out on book one. I'm looking forward to book three!
