In Bill Garwin’s Chasing Madison, when Madison James diverts thirty-two million dollars from Russian financier Vasily Popov through a law firm trust account tied to attorney Atticus Wright, she sets in motion a pursuit that stretches from Venice to the American Southwest. Popov forces Atticus to locate her, placing him alongside strategist Jules Bronsky as they trace Madison’s movements across Europe. In Las Vegas, a contract killing implicates illusionist Skye Duffy and widens the conflict, drawing law enforcement and criminal networks into the search. Motorcycle clubs mobilize across state lines while Popov deploys armed operatives to intercept Madison before she can disappear again. As alliances shift and surveillance tightens, Atticus and Jules must decide how far they will go to contain the damage tied to Madison’s theft while staying ahead of a financier determined to reclaim what he lost.
Bill Garwin’s Chasing Madison is a globe-spanning thriller that links financial betrayal and calculated survival across continents. The writing is sharp, intelligent, and completely immersive, and the action is pitch-perfect. Madison James is a spectacularly persuasive character, weaponizing both intelligence and intimacy. She is strategically cold and relentlessly ambitious, and easily the most fascinating character in the book. Garwin's visually rendered settings breathe life into everywhere feet touch the ground, from the Mercato di Mezzo in Bologna that funnels a chase and spills into Piazza Maggiore under circling drones, to the glitter mines of Las Vegas—a place near to my heart, as my wife lived there for over a decade—with its high limit blackjack rooms and the aging yet stalwart New York New York hotel. There are plenty of twists, and the novel ends with the door wide open for a sequel. I'm excited to see where Garwin may take us next. Recommended.
