When an adolescent girl turns down her chance at eternal life, she must face unexpected consequences in the brilliant young adult dystopian novel Chosen by Shade Owens. After winning the war for immortality over six decades ago, the wealthy elite subdued the remaining population. The victors built the city of Olympus and divided the rest of the territory into ten districts. Each district supplies all the resources to sustain those living in the metropolis. Every year the elites hold a lottery promising one lucky person to receive the serum that gives them eternal life and a place in Olympus. Now seventeen, Silver is eligible for the drawing. However, working in the gardens with her mother and grandmother since she was a small child, Silver has no desire to leave her family. In an unexpected turn of events, Silver ties with another girl in the lottery. To the horror of her mother and the presiding elite, Silver willingly concedes to the other girl. However, Silver's refusal has shocking and devastating repercussions. Will she and her family survive?

Chosen by Shade Owens is a provocative and exciting dystopian novel. The story is captivating from the first page until the last. The plot is stimulating, and the setting and storyline capture the imagination. Silver is a courageous and admirable protagonist, and her grandmother is an ideal model. The hardships and abuse Silver and the lower echelons endure are heartrending. This fabulous book is a brilliant beginning for a series, and I eagerly anticipate Silver's next adventure; it will be fascinating to see how she confronts her newest challenge. Beautifully written, it is a scintillating and thought-provoking story that promises to entertain young adult fans of dystopian novels with a science fiction undertone.
