Set in Victorian London, Cordcatcher Joins The Show (An Edward Fallion Steampunk Mystery) by Brian Longford tells the story of Edward Fallion who disguised himself as a butler to physician Dr. Kay. Fallion discovered how a simple mistake changed the course of history and parallel time streams inhabited by much evolved earth-like species. Keeping the species apart is what drives Fallion, a hard task as inventors keep leaving time doors open. It’s up to Fallion as the self-appointed closer of time doors to find out who opened them and how.

Longford’s time travel concept for the story is fascinating. The foggy streets of old London is the perfect setting, creating an almost 'noiresque' world, and species such as the cat-like Cordcatcher added a unique trait to the world building. Edward Fallion makes an appealing central protagonist, while the supporting characters – humans or otherwise – are all nicely fleshed out and intriguing. On the other hand, I wished that Fallion’s backstory was revealed much faster, as I found the pace of the beginning chapters somewhat deliberate. Nevertheless, this is just a small dent in the story for me.

Longford also has done an excellent job of writing a multifaceted plot. The mystery element is well developed into the premise. The dialogue is believable and spontaneous. This is a series, so another installment is expected as the ending provides just enough hints. On the whole, this is a good time travel tale that readers can enjoy.
