In Michelle Reynoso’s Ascent of the Fallen, teenager Faith McDaniels is trapped in a town where corpses called “deadies” are clawing their way out of the ground. Three weeks after learning that her abilities are linked to another realm called Enlitra, Faith finds Earth changing around her as the boundary between the two worlds begins to fail. The being she calls Him is hunting her, turning familiar neighborhoods into places where life can disappear in an instant. Faith travels with three friends through abandoned streets as official alerts blame a radiation emergency and order residents to evacuate. Their route keeps narrowing as the weather turns unnatural and the dead multiply through the surrounding area. Faith must understand what is happening to Enlitra before the threat pursuing her reaches beyond her town.
Michelle Reynoso’s Ascent of the Fallen is an incredible supernatural fantasy with a frighteningly imaginative world that feels real. The characters give the fantasy its heart, something Faith proves when her compassion sends her toward a wrecked cruiser to search for injured officers as the dead close in. The writing itself is excellent. The author has a true gift for making the supernatural feel physical, as Faith draws energy from Amita and feels cinnamon-spiced heat rush through her body, and Amita’s meditation shifts that sensation toward cool moonlight. The settings deserve special praise here, from Windermere’s unfinished rooms above a basement, to Tomas’s white colonial beside a yard reduced to cracked earth. Readers drawn to supernatural survival fantasy should put this finale to The Girl, the Pendant and the Portal series on their list. Very highly recommended.
