Cornerstone: A Josie Jameson Mystery by Jennifer Lynne Hotes is an enticing paranormal coming-of-age story with a sophisticated female protagonist. Josie Jameson seems to be an ordinary teenage girl from Seattle who attends high school and enjoys having a boyfriend. But she has a powerful secret. Embedded in her heart are stones that connect her to seven witches across the globe and these stones have been corrupted over time by evil deeds, not hers. Now Josie receives the impossible mission to cleanse the stones. But she has no clue how to do it. Sarah Jameson, her mother, might have helped her, but she died with her own magical secrets, and now Josie must find a way of cleansing the stones on her own. The sad part of her mission is that the stones become more evil by the day and the witches are already threatening her. Can she unlock the secrets to her magic in time or will she be consumed by the evil growing in her heart?
What I enjoyed most in Jennifer Lynne Hotes’ writing is originality, both in plot structure and character. The idea of magical stones embedded in someone’s heart is unique and the fact that the protagonist doesn’t know how to use her magic makes it even more interesting. I loved the element of time and how it is used in the story to build tension. Things grow worse as days go by and the reader becomes genuinely worried about the fate of the protagonist. The suspense gnaws at the reader as they want to find out if Josie can figure out the answers in time before something sinister happens to her. Cornerstone: A Josie Jameson Mystery is balanced, deftly plotted, and beautifully written.
