In Jennifer Ivy Walker's Dragonslayer's Valkyrie: The Legend of Sigurd and Brynhildr, Sigurd becomes a Sea Wolf warrior with a blood oath to avenge Sigmund, his murdered father, while Brynhildr, daughter of King Budli and Freyja, faces a royal decree tying marriage to combat. Their paths meet at the Sólhjarta Tournament, where Brynhildr’s wish to ride as a Valkyrie collides with Sigurd’s need to restore the Völsung throne. A soulbinding mark joins them before Odin’s judgment drives Brynhildr from the heavens and sends Sigurd toward the dragon Fáfnir, whose treasure may finance his war against King Lyngvi. As Sigurd fights for a crown, Brynhildr becomes the target of divine punishment and mortal schemes. Their bond must survive fire, enchantment, prophecy, and the men who would use marriage as a weapon against them.
Jennifer Ivy Walker’s Dragonslayer’s Valkyrie leans into mythology through its joined heroes: Sigurd's dragon victory and Brynhildr's divine warrior calling. I love Brynhildr, who is all about claiming her own future. Her condition that any suitor must defeat her in combat is brilliant, and Walker makes her a female lead of power and agency. The author gives her ancillary characters equal fleshing out, and I found Kveld Nightwolf, the Sea Wolf rune-worker, superb. He sanctifies Sigurd and Agnar’s blood oath beneath Brynhildr’s tower, and this plays heavily into the world-building. Sea Wolves live by blood bonds, Valkyries serve Freyja’s realm, and kings use public vows to shape private lives. The settings have a grand, cinematic sweep, from Hrafnfjall’s rose-hidden stair that gives the romance secrecy, to Hinterfjall’s Ring of Fire that turns a curse into a visual ordeal. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy Norse legend, shieldmaidens, rune magic, fated lovers, and mythic adventure will adore this book. Very highly recommended.
