In Crackskull Jack Goes to the Ball (The Pirate who was Scared of Birds Volume 2), author Michelle Path introduces young readers to the happy life Crackskull Jack is leading with his wife, Penny Darkling. They are a match made in heaven. The crew does not like the idea of having a woman on board and they blame Penny for everything that goes wrong. They are all scared of her, though they do not like to admit it. Penny receives an invitation to attend the annual masquerade ball of Lord and Lady Craydon and she is very excited about it. The Eye of the Storm drops anchor off the coast of the island of Merrifare. All of them get ready, wear their best clothes and go to the ball. Will they all enjoy the ball? Will the romantic ambiance make Jack and Penny fall in love again?
It is a lighthearted and fun sequel to the previous book in the Crackskull Jack series. The characters are lovable and the illustrations breathe life into them and the scenes, making it an entertaining read for children. It is a good story to read aloud in classrooms and children will enjoy listening to it before going to sleep. The narration is detailed, making the interactions between the characters vivid and palpable. Crackskull Jack and his wife, Penny, make an adorable and romantic couple and I look forward to reading more adventure stories on the high seas about Crackskull Jack, Penny, and the crew of The Eye of the Storm from this author!
