Fifteen-year-old Jessie Oliver, a late-developing empath, was grappling with her unique abilities, and it was all taking a toll on her. Apart from having seizures and her health deteriorating, she could not control her lapses into the in-between world, a realm between the dead and the living, where a figure she calls Flesh Woman, the protector of the realm, haunts her. It only gets worse when Flesh Woman declares Jessie to be part of a prophecy of doom. However, there is one way of evading the foretold looming disaster, and it demands that Jessie master her power and put her trust in not only her friends but also distant mentors. With the help of a long-gone empath relative, alongside her team, can Jessie succeed in the daunting task coming her way? Find out in Joey Paul’s Cramping Chronicles: The Fourth Torment.

Lovers of young adult coming-of-age dark urban fantasy novels blended with adventure and a splash of drama will find Joey Paul’s The Fourth Torment an enthralling read. With vivid depictions, Paul whisked me away from reality and dropped me into a world of imagination. I got caught up in a whirlwind of betrayal, friendship, family, teenage drama, secrets, sacrifices, dark prophecies, destiny, and more. The subtle tone accompanying the narrative, along with the plot twists, kept me turning to page after page. I never knew where the story was heading. Using character-driven conversations edged with sentiment and an introspective voice, Paul enabled me to experience the cast’s emotions. Juxtaposing their complex traits made it easy to connect with them. I highly recommend reading the preceding installments in the Cramping Chronicles to enjoy this story.
