Critical Cover-Up by Margie Miklas tells the story of Allison Jamison who decides on a change of career and takes up a position as a critical care nurse. She anticipates her new role to be one that will be rewarding and enjoyable, but finds herself questioning certain practices and the dedication of some of the other staff. Add to that the mysterious murder of a prominent surgeon, and she begins to investigate, unravelling cover-ups and malpractice that she had never imagined possible. Intertwined into the story are relationship merry-go-rounds that make her question who she can trust, and whether she is willing to sacrifice all she believes in as she searches to find the truth.
The author, Margie Miklas, has crafted an interesting scenario where she is able to weave into the storyline her clear personal knowledge of the inner workings of a critical care unit. This, coupled with complex characters and teasers for the reader to keep them guessing, has resulted in a fast-paced mystery to be solved. The writing is clear and concise and whilst there are sometimes in-depth details of medical procedures, the pace is maintained to keep the reader’s interest. The main character, Allison, is believable and is one that the reader will empathise with. The little twists and turns along the way make this story one that will appeal especially to those who enjoy medical dramas, as well as a touch of mystery and the solving of a murder. A job well executed by this author.
