How do you move forward when wounds from the past are still open? Crooked Lines by Sally Barclay Faddis begins as Dahlia Charles gets ready for a family reunion at her inn in Coyote Creek, hoping for the weekend to go well. As she organizes every detail, it becomes clear that her relationships, especially with her parents, carry a tension that hasn’t fully healed. The story introduces the people around her, including Liam, a close friend who may want something more. But is Dahlia ready to take that step? There’s also Lydia, her sister and closest confidant, whom she often turns to for support. As the novel moves through the weekend and into the future, the family’s shared history gradually sheds some light on the present. As details are revealed, the characters start to face what they’ve been holding on to for years. Will Dahlia finally move on from the pain that has shaped her life? Will they all get the happily-ever-after they so deserve?

I found myself quickly pulled into the characters’ lives in Crooked Lines by Sally Barclay Faddis. The writing is easy to follow, but the family relationships and personal growth add depth. I appreciated how the story moves between different perspectives, making it easier to understand each one. Dahlia really stood out. I felt for her because of her strained relationship with her parents, yet I was angry at her for not seeing the good right in front of her. I also loved the reference to my favorite show, Gilmore Girls. It was a fun moment that made me smile. Overall, this was a meaningful and engaging read that kept my interest from beginning to end. Fans of character-driven family dramas will want to pick this book up. This novel proves it’s okay to make mistakes, which is echoed by Lorelai from Gilmore Girls when she says, “You have so many years to mess up. Isn’t it wonderful?”
