Tears of the Flames is a dark fantasy novel by Sisi Zhao. Mira Murphy's life turns upside down after a brutal assault in the woods awakens something dark and powerful within her, summoning a mysterious green vortex over her hometown. A couple of years pass, and Mira and her parents have moved to the town of Starfall, where she meets Lilith, a teenager. Mira awakens her powers once again when some thugs confront her and Lilith in a dark alley, leading to blackouts in Starfall. She is shocked when the Azure Dragon reveals that she is one of the Four Keys that keep the River of Time flowing. However, a shadowy organization is trying to capture the keys. Now, the fate of humanity is in jeopardy.

Featuring multi-layered characters and an epic story, Tears of the Flames is an engrossing adventure ride for fantasy fans. Author Sisi Zhao has built an immersive fantasy world, jam-packed with action, mystery, and deep lore. Among all the fantasy books I've read this year, this one is up there on top in terms of worldbuilding. The author combines mythology and folklore to create a magical world that is distinctly unique. Another highlight was the characters. Every character has an underlying backstory that brings depth and complexity to them, and it makes you even more invested in their story arcs. Mira and Lilith aside, I also enjoyed the story arcs of secondary characters, such as Cara and Nina. I found the ending very satisfying, especially the way Mira embraced her destiny in her own way. Fantasy readers are going to love this novel.

Tears of the Flames by Sisi Zhao follows Mira Murphy, a young girl whose life changes after a violent encounter awakens a mysterious power within her. As strange events ripple through her town, Mira is torn between fear and curiosity, unsure whether she is a force for good or something far more dangerous. Years later, questions about her identity deepen when she learns that her parents have been hiding a secret tied to the voices she hears and the memories slowly returning to her. Her bond with Lilith, who sees her as pure and meaningful, offers grounding as the world around them begins to change. As a secret organization searches for a power linked to Mira and the legend of Pandora’s box, the story expands beyond her personal struggle into a larger conflict that threatens everyone she cares about.

Sisi Zhao's writing blends introspection with action, creating a steady rhythm that moves between internal reflection and outward events. Scenes that focus on relationships and personal choices are balanced with unfolding mystery and elements of fantasy, which keep the story engaging. The language is clear and purposeful, guiding readers through complex ideas about identity, morality, and connection without losing focus on the characters at the center of the story. Readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy emphasizing emotional and philosophical themes will enjoy Tears of the Flames, particularly those drawn to stories that explore difficult choices, shifting identities, and the process of personal transformation over time. The balance between personal struggle and larger stakes makes it especially appealing to those who enjoy stories where inner conflict shapes the course of events.

Tears of the Flames by Sisi Zhao is a coming-of-age, dark fantasy with an incredible protagonist. The story begins with Mira Murphy as her life changes after a traumatic assault. After the incident, Mira gained dangerous powers that she couldn’t explain. Her memory is faulty, her powers scare her, and things get even more serious when strange events begin happening around her town. Before she knows it, Mira is questioning everyone and everything in her life. She only finds reprieve and solace in Lilith, a dear friend who always stood by Mira, even when her abilities scared Lilith. However, things turn dangerous when a secret organization tries to gain access to Mira to control her devastating power. What they promise may be perfect for her, but does she truly want it? It is now up to Mira to decide if she wants to become a danger to everyone or be the savior Lilith sees in her.

Author Sisi Zhao created a powerful coming-of-age story that strikes the perfect balance between the growth of the protagonist and a suspenseful story. I loved Mira and how she battled with herself. She truly believed she was evil and the devil, but her relationship with Lilith proved that there was goodness inside her. Lilith was the calm to Mira’s storm. They balanced each other out and made sure she was in the right frame of mind. The world-building is fantastic and well done. I loved the pace of the story and the narrative style. Although this book was a little long, reading it was worth it. The ending was fitting and almost cathartic. I cannot praise Tears of the Flames highly enough!

Tears of the Flames by Sisi Zhao follows teenager Mira Murphy after an unexplained force within her is activated, and the cracking of a vortex across the skies and blackouts evoke fear and panic. Following two years of repetitive, dreamlike episodes, suspicion of her parents grows. Mira makes a friend in Lilith, who becomes her sole source of trust. When danger returns, so does Mira’s power. Lilith thinks Mira’s alter ego is benevolent, but Mira is afraid it is far darker. As repressed memories return and a presence behind the voices in her mind emerges, a covert group pursuing a powerful relic begins moving to claim her. “She needed to know what she was. She needed to know why she was what she was. She needed to know the purpose of her existence.”

Tears of the Flames by Sisi Zhao intensifies Mira Murphy's already awkward teen years by, quite literally, giving the girl wings. Zhao is restrained in the gradual unfurling of Mira's phoenix-like transformation, following her progression into a full awareness of her identity. It initially feels like a teenager dealing with random chaos, but it grows into a whole world that the author meticulously constructs. The world-building includes Azure, a dragon-like being who guides Mira, and White, a force with a unique, immense power. I have always been fascinated by the concept of Past Life Regression. Zhao weaves in a lot of those concepts, so the story itself is not only one of fantasy and transformation, but also reincarnation and the reintroduction of what happened in another life, impacting the current one. Zhao's creativity is immense and intelligent, and she can add me to what I imagine will be a rapidly growing list of fans.

In Sisi Zhao’s Tears of the Flames, Mira Murphy enters Sunrise Park searching for ginkgo leaves and follows a boy into an isolated area where an assault on her triggers a sudden transformation that produces fiery wings and drives him away. She returns home with no explanation for what happened, yet a glowing mark on her skin signals that the event has altered her body. As a green vortex appears above the town and a blackout spreads through every system, Mira learns that a boy named Eric Ekker has become violently unstable after encountering a figure he calls a devil. While her guardian, Cara, seeks medical answers, Mira begins to recognize a direct connection between her transformation and the breakdown unfolding around her, forcing her to confront what she has become.

Sisi Zhao’s Tears of the Flames is a truly ambitious story that is perfectly executed, and that says a great deal about Zhao's skill as a writer, given the sheer length of this novel. Mira is a strong, youthful female lead who is molded through tragedy, as well as radical transformation, both physically and emotionally. I really like Lilith, a fellow student that meets Mira in the school library while reading about Chinese folklore. She remains steadily beside Mira even after witnessing something in her that would send most running for the hills. She turns again to translated bamboo texts from her family’s collection to identify a historical counterpart to what she saw. The most fascinating character is Gargoyle, who leads a group called the Pathfinders inside a hidden facility named Pandora’s Box. The world-building is extraordinary and structured around two parallel systems: everyday human life and a concealed network of researchers. It's so engrossing and so creative that when combined with Zhao's prose and Mira's arc, this is a story worth every second spent on the page. Very highly recommended.
