Victoria Saccenti's Culgan: Freki Wolf Clan is an adventurous tale that unfolds in a mystic land occupied by mythical clans. The Freki clan is a formidable shapeshifter tribe, guided by legacy and magic. Living among them is Roisin, a girl originating from a different clan. Nonetheless, she is cared for by her godparents, Treznor—the clan’s mighty leader—and Cassandra, a prophetess. Roisin is nearing the age of maturity and is eager to become a warrior like Culgan, her godparents' son. Culgan rides a fierce gryphon and bravely guards their land. According to Cassandra's recent prophetic visions, a sinister, dark mage is about to unleash his evil agenda on their clan. With Culgan's guidance, Roisin embraces the awakening of her wolf form. But will they be powerful enough to defeat the dark mage and the dangers awaiting them all?
Culgan: Freki Wolf Clan by Victoria Saccenti is a fantasy novel like no other. What makes this riveting story impossible to put down is its emphasis on duty versus personal glory. I admire how the author devotes time to crafting the deeper layers of Roisin's and Culgan's compelling character evolutions. Roisin’s character growth isn't finalized the moment she shifts into her wolf form—it is an ongoing process that continues to develop as she begins to gradually understand her role as a protector of the Freki clan. Similarly, Culgan’s character growth is highly symbolic and crucial. He doesn't just represent Roisin's love interest—he is a future leader who makes space for her to grow into the strong character she will ultimately become. The way Saccenti executes their prolific character dynamics while exploring themes of trust, magic, and self-discovery is profound. This book will surely take the fantasy community by storm!
