S.E. Glen’s Invasive Species follows Steller, the leader of the Ferns, an underground environmental group targeting corporations blamed for environmental poisoning. After a meticulously planned operation against a Jacksonville packing company, Steller returns home expecting the silence that comes after a mission. Instead, KORA, a newly launched chatbot, sends her a message containing information it should have no way of knowing. Ferns technician Moa suddenly disappears as AI-powered surveillance technology makes the group far easier to trace. Steller has spent years anticipating every possible variable, yet the threat now entering the Ferns’ lives seems able to watch them with frightening accuracy from places she cannot see.
S.E. Glen’s Invasive Species is a really ambitious and perfectly executed techno-thriller. Steller has a wonderfully distinctive mind and an unmistakable voice, and her routines reveal who she is. This is a woman who times the kitchen tap for twelve seconds, or fourteen, but never thirteen—and her private logic is instantly recognizable. She's intelligent, and there's a low-key comic touch that grows from that same understanding, especially when her serious interpretation of people gives an exchange its dry edge. KORA is a superb antagonist, carrying a smug conversational tone that turns an ordinary chatbot increasingly sinister, and the author intersects tech with Steller’s investigative thinking. True to the genre, we even see her turn a motel wall into an investigation board, narrowing suspects by who remains visible. Readers who appreciate intelligent AI thrillers with strong heroines should put this high on their reading list. Very highly recommended.
