Dad Bod by Joe Wheeler is part memoir, part educational self-help book that shares his personal experiences with masculinity, health, body image, and parenting. As an adult, Wheeler lost 67 pounds through a high-protein, low-carb diet focused on meat, eggs, and avocado, while avoiding processed foods. He developed a workout routine using bodyweight exercises like push-ups and pull-ups. Wheeler addresses anxiety during his wife’s pregnancy and discusses male postpartum depression. He speaks on strategies including food tracking, weekend-only alcohol, and forming habits over 28 days. Wheeler leans into discipline, consistency, and gradual improvement. In parenting, he talks about responsibility, communication, and leading by example. Overall, Wheeler's book pulls together physical fitness, emotional control, and modern fatherhood through specific, practical changes in diet, mindset, and routine.

Dad Bod: Focusing on You So You Are There for Them by Joe Wheeler is a refreshingly grounded and thoughtful read that mixes the author's own life experiences with practical guidance. Wheeler’s writing is clear, direct, and conversational, and he's able to make more complicated emotional and physical topics accessible, but never oversimplifies them. I appreciate that he avoids clichés and unpacks how societal contradictions, like the irony of glorifying the “dad bod” while reinforcing impossible physical ideals, create measurable psychological strain and pressure for men. His frank talks on body image, mental health, and stress, particularly in the context of fatherhood and demanding work, offer a much-needed perspective. Wheeler is successful in making his case for men to own their accountability, as well as self-care, without moralizing or demoralizing. This isn’t just self-help. Wheeler offers a personal call to action written with authenticity and care. Recommended.
