Alex Morton’s sweeping historical fiction novel, We Are Not Yours, pulls us headfirst into the dark times of a 1970s right-wing military dictatorship on the remote island of Mythos. At the heart of the story is Perdiki, a famous rebel composer who escapes state captivity with his huge, loyal Newfoundland dog, Argos. Zev, a fierce, wisecracking shepherd, hides them, and Perdiki’s music quickly becomes a risky symbol of national resistance against the tyrannical rulers, culminating in a secret, defiant concert in a cliffside churchyard. Cut to decades later, where a grieving Greek-Canadian novelist named Spiro Glaros travels back to his ancestral roots. Urged by his activist lover, Anastasia, Spiro must face his deep inner guilt and search for emotional healing. It makes you wonder whether Spiro can untangle his painful memories and find personal redemption before history’s shadow breaks him down for good.
In We Are Not Yours, Alex Morton delivers a truly heartfelt tribute to human expression and the healing nature of creative art. The prose captures the soulful essence of traditional Greek music, letting the sounds of the local culture raise the stakes of a deeply emotional conflict. By giving his characters a very raw, human depth, Morton perfectly shows the silent pain of political exile and the unshakeable ways a community protects its own. The setting feels like a living part of the conflict, changing from a cold, lonely island into a stronghold for resistance. Because the book explores how old traumas keep echoing through generations, the narrative offers a very rare, intimate perspective on healing and survival. It is a lovely tribute to how creativity can triumph over tyranny. I’d recommend it to anyone searching for a powerful story about the unbreakable human spirit.
