Dancing Through Space by author Lydia Lukidis is a biography written for children about Dr. Mae Jemison. The story begins with Mae's interests as a curious young girl. She is fascinated with the stars and loves learning about nature. She also loves to move and dance. As she grows up, Mae continues to thrive as a diligent student. After begging her parents to allow her to formally train in dance, she also enrolls in dance school. Mae's interdisciplinary passion and perseverance continue throughout adulthood, leading her to become a physician and groundbreaking astronaut. The story depicts Dr. Mae Jemison's inspiring journey, which intertwines scientific curiosity and artistic expression.

Lydia Lukidis beautifully illustrates how Dr. Jemison defied conventional boundaries by embracing both scientific logic and artistic creativity, ultimately becoming the first black woman to travel into outer space. By demonstrating that seemingly disparate interests can coexist and even complement each other, the book offers young readers an invaluable lesson in pursuing multifaceted dreams. The author's writing is accessible and engaging, making complex concepts understandable for children. I did not know very much about Dr. Mae Jemison until I read this book. I am now very interested in her life and want to learn more! She is a remarkable woman who refuses to be limited by traditional expectations. The pictures by Sawyer Cloud show how Jemison's life is more than biographical facts. Dancing Through Space is an essential addition to children's educational literature, providing a compelling narrative of ambition, resilience, and the transformative power of embracing life.
