Dangerous Mission is a work of fiction in the action, adventure, and thriller subgenres. The work is best suited to the adult reading audience and was penned by author Clark Selby. In this fifth novel from Selby’s sharp mind, CIA agent Tom Parker and his brilliant billionaire wife Jenny Hu are back on the case and firmly out of retirement when news of a deadly mystery reaches them. American soldiers are turning up dead, and a trip to Afghanistan shows Tom that neither he nor Jenny are safe. With enemies lurking everywhere they turn and not knowing who they can trust, a mysterious island seems to hold the answer to the growing threat. What results is an international espionage story with our heroes’ lives on the line.

Author Clark Selby has done it once again with another gripping read that truly encompasses everything I’ve loved about this very dangerous series. The pacing of this particular story was excellent, with a capable writer balancing the many different exotic locations and settings so that the logistics of the storytelling never became confusing, but were always exciting and filled with twists. I really enjoyed the central plot mechanic of trap-setting and deception in this novel, especially with such intelligent leads like Jenny and Tom, whose charisma and shared wisdom oozes off the page and leaves you dying to know what will happen next. Overall, Dangerous Mission was another un-put-down-able read with striking dialogue, an intriguing central mystery, and a fantastic ending that few will see coming. A highly recommended adventure thriller read.

Tom Parker is needed by his country once again. In Dangerous Mission, the fifth book of the series, Clark Selby's beloved retired Army Colonel and CIA Agent is called upon by the President to help deal with a man named al-Garde, leader of the Afghan troops who had reputedly turned on the American forces. He is accompanied by his wife Jenny, a Hong Kong billionaire, who becomes the newest addition to the CIA. Tom arrives in Afghanistan, only to be the subject of attacks on his life that leave him wounded. With a bounty on his head by al-Qaeda, he recuperates in his old friend warlord Omar Hemkatyar's castle. But when news of al-Garde's escape to an unusual island reaches his ears, Tom immediately sets off for Mackinac Island in Michigan. Will he be able to find this man and complete the mission?

This is the third book I've read by Clark Selby, and his ability to turn out fast-paced, action-packed thrillers is getting better with each installment. People who have grown up watching 80s action movies like Rocky will have an absolute blast reading Dangerous Mission. The book is full of witty dialogue and banter between Tom and his colleagues, bringing a bit of levity to the story. Tom is a charismatic hero who will never hesitate to put his life on the line for his country. You can't help but root for someone like that. The book is written in the style of a blockbuster action movie, and it is all the more entertaining for it. Recommended to all action aficionados out there.

In Dangerous Mission: Book Five by Clark Selby, Tom Parker is finally living the dream with a gorgeous and successful wife, an incredible stepdaughter, a little son, and a lavish lifestyle after years of serving in the army and working for the CIA behind enemy lines. He gets called away from retirement to execute a challenging task in Afghanistan after the death of several CIA operatives working in the region. Meanwhile, Tom has had a price put on his head by al-Qaeda, but his wife insists on accompanying him on this dangerous mission. Upon landing in Kabul, he faces numerous attacks on many fronts, even in the US Army Hospital. There seems to be no safe place for him and his wife, and the mission becomes even harder to complete. His adventures include near-death experiences, a wedding party, the camaraderie of friends and fellow patriotic soldiers, the blissful companionship of his wife, and the rigorous yet intriguing mission of finding a slimy, evasive traitor.

Dangerous Mission is a straightforward and fascinating narrative. It explores and highlights the bravery of the troops and the sacrifices these men and women have to make to ensure the world is safe from terrorist groups and their catastrophic activities. Clark Shelby does a remarkable job of portraying the characters' personal lives and interests beyond their service and military prowess. I found the relationship between Tom and his wife, Jenny, and the marriage and friendly gatherings both captivating and a beautiful depiction of the humanity of the men and women in uniform overseas. Clark also offers a fascinating story that is a perfect read for those who fancy action-packed, espionage, and military-style novels.

In Dangerous Mission, Book Five by Clark Selby, Tom Parker was in the army for twenty years. He also worked for the CIA and is a hero. Jenny’s husband died in a car crash in Vietnam. Her father and father-in-law helped Jenny to run her husband’s company. Tom and Jenny met while Tom was working in Hong Kong to stop dangerous cargo from being shipped into the USA. Ron Parsons from the CIA phoned Tom asking for his help. The CIA helped a leader named al-Garde to build an army to help them in Afghanistan. He has turned against the CIA. Now Tom must help the CIA to get rid of al-Garde without anyone knowing that America had anything to do with it. His murder must be blamed on al-Qaeda. That way the army that al-Garde built will stay on the CIA side.

Dangerous Mission by Clark Selby has an interesting and exciting plot. The story is fast-paced and there was never a dull moment. The plot is packed full of action with suspense and that made it very powerful. I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning. I kept turning the pages and could not put the book down as it captured my interest and I felt compelled to keep reading. The characters were well developed, authentic, and skillfully handled. The main characters remained strong throughout the story. The other characters were introduced in such a way I could remember all of them. Each character had their background and personality. The story was unpredictable and there was always a surprise turn waiting for me. The book is well written and managed to exceed my expectations. It was not at all what I had expected.

Tom Parker's numerous years of meritorious service to the nation have made him an invaluable asset such that, despite his retirement, the Central Intelligence Agency still calls on him when there are sensitive assignments to conduct. This time it is none other than the President who requests Tom's assistance. American troops are killed in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan but contrary to the information making the rounds, it is believed there may be some mischief afoot especially when the local leader shows signs of divided loyalties. Tom is sent into the Afghan mountains to conduct a special investigation and, if need be, eliminate the threat. Unknown to him, his enemies are making plans of their own along similar lines. Tribal loyalties will be tested in Clark Selby's Dangerous Mission: Book Five.

Dangerous Mission is a fast-paced adventure novel loosely adapted from the Afghan crisis. The principal character comes across as a man for all situations with his solutions-for-every-scenario approach to solving problems. Clark Selby manages to maintain the exciting tempo to the end of the novel. There are certain aspects of the story I found somewhat odd, such as the ease with which Jenny is co-opted into the Agency. This pushed the limits of credibility for me, but every other aspect of the novel fits into the realm of the acceptable. If you're looking for some exciting reading, this book fits the bill with its combination of action and romance. Selby does a wonderful job with this novel.
