Diddly Duggins and the Great Memory Misplacement by Daniel Robert Long is a unique and exciting adventure where magic, books, and fantasy come to life. Diddly Duggins doesn’t want to waste his time learning about the Great Memory Misplacement. Not when he could be spending his time drawing instead. Why should he be interested in the memories of deceased loved ones? That soon changes after the death of his loved one. He quickly learns the consequences of avoiding grief: no memory of the woman who raised him. Now he’ll do whatever he can to retrieve the memories, even teaming up with Runduncklety Snippet, a stumpjumper, who claims to be after the same thing. Together they venture to the home of other stumpjumpers, but soon the two are forced to run from this world into another.
Diddly Duggins and the Great Memory Misplacement primarily focuses on Diddly and Snippet’s journey together to find lost memories, but this journey takes them into different, unique locations. The whimsical nature of the story is reminiscent of stories such as Inkheart and A Wrinkle in Time, and makes the most of its creativity. The stakes feel realistic, even with the otherworldly elements. While you’re witnessing marching trees, you’re also meeting characters that feel real. These imaginative elements make this an ideal read for older children, as the writing has fun wordplay and witty dialogue that pokes fun at the characters. This keeps the story lighthearted even as it explores deeper themes such as grief and loss, focusing on keeping the memory of loved ones alive. This is a lovely way to teach children about or help them understand grief in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming. There is a lot of talk about death and the afterlife, but it’s fitting with the magic of the world and creates a beautiful way for children to comprehend the topics. Daniel Robert Long has created someone unique and creative in Diddly Duggins, who takes you on an adventure into unexpectedly wonderful places that explore magic, grief, memories, and friendship.
