David's Space Flight: Waking Up is a children's educational picture book by Sharron L. Hillman-Dwyer. After accidentally falling asleep in class, David wakes up to Julia reminding him of the project they were working on. They must present five interesting facts about Venus to the class the next day. While David starts listing the facts, Julia realizes that they have to find a way to make these facts sound interesting. After a conversation with Annie, David comes up with the idea to build a volcano to show how Venus works. Soon, the friends start building a volcano out of clay, using food coloring, vinegar, and baking soda to good effect. Will their project be successful? How will the class receive their presentation?

David's Space Flight: Waking Up is a children's activity book with a compelling story featuring three kids working together on a school science project. Through this immersive picture book, Sharron L. Hillman-Dwyer demonstrates the importance of teamwork and showcases the qualities that make Venus such a unique planet in the solar system. All three characters -- David, Julia, and Annie -- have distinct personalities, and this creates a lively dynamic between the friends that young readers will enjoy. Toward the end of the book, readers will also find a word search game and extension activities to engage in, covering subjects such as English, science, maths, art, and geography. These are the types of books that make children interested in science and curious about space exploration. I enjoyed it very much, and urge parents to introduce it to their kids!
