Max Riley, a newly-appointed CEO, boarded the corporate jet in Denver and was found dead when it landed in Omaha. Claudia Sullivan, a new but gifted private investigator, is hired by Max’s family to assist the police in the investigation of his death. Claudia is a close friend of the family and a former employee at Max’s company, so she has the advantage of knowing who she has to interview and investigate. As she seeks answers, Claudia learns the truth about Max and his relationships with the people who are closest to him.

Dead Behind the Eyes by Brock Car is definitely a book geared for readers who expect a good, psychologically-driven murder mystery. As the story progresses, readers will discover the ugly reality regarding Max Riley and the people around him through Claudia. Power, betrayal, and sexual addiction blight and connect the individuals that she investigates. In the end, the consequences are both emotive and dreadful. Max’s death may be the catalyst, but in my opinion Claudia is the one that moves the story.

All in all, this is an enjoyable read. Dead Behind the Eyes may not be as prominent as some of my favorite mystery murders, but it is an excellent story on its own merits. Car successfully delivers a solid plot with enough twists and suspense. Her prose is evocative and she provides a neat conclusion to the story. The characters are easily relatable; they are just regular people who got caught up in undesirable situations and decided to react to protect themselves or their loved ones.
