Prelude to the Storm is the first book in the Storm Cycle series by Leonard J. Chastain, a spellbinding epic fantasy with incredible worldbuilding and unforgettable characters. Welcome to the frozen wastes of Baria, where twenty-year-old Imar watches in horror as an old enemy resurfaces: the mindless Kazenvek his village has hunted for centuries. Now they are back, and they begin to scheme and kill with their venomous claws. When his father falls victim to their poison, Imar inherits the duties of the chief and a dangerous task: drive six thousand ice demons into the Dragon's Vale before the more powerful ones from Khadûl's back door overwhelm the north. In the south, Kitoor, the wanderer, returns home to discover the Great Forest’s immortal protector has gone missing, probably imprisoned by Warlord Damone Kavamar. He must brave the odds to free him. Meanwhile, the aging knight, Sir Garith, newly favored with perfect recall, arrives with a prophecy about Kitoor just as the walls begin to fall.
Leonard J. Chastain’s first book in the series is a winner, and it ticks every box in a propulsive fantasy—great and memorable characters, impeccable worldbuilding, a twisty plot, and great writing. Imar is a young hero who feels realistic; he is reluctant at first, afraid to disappoint the god who seems to have chosen him. Kitoor appears to belong to the fringes of the world, but is many things: a wanderer who hides far more than is immediately noticeable. The author lets these characters' layers peel back slowly as the story progresses and the tension mounts. The pacing is relentless, and there is action aplenty, from a cave ambush to council debates that move swiftly into the battle of the Vale, where women warriors are used as bait. Prelude to the Storm pulled me in irresistibly with the suspense, and the three subplots are skillfully plotted to keep you turning the pages of this gloriously epic fantasy.
