Degrade: Tesla Expansion Book 1 by Mark Lingane burns in an unrelenting sun of a distant future, where humans struggle to survive a decimated environment of harsh political moves and eroded physical resources. Couched in the Western Desert of Australia, Arid Geiger is a teen with his own Empire; a mobile machine structure called a Dowser utilized for finding water, which became his oasis after his parents met a grisly fate. Water is now one of the most valued resources, and Arid feels his survival is secured. However, vast machinery is at play in this world that will come crashing into Arid’s future with grinding suspense and unexpected danger. Arid becomes the focus of a power play that seeks to gain an ultimate weapon; a race against deceit and betrayal where the line between good and evil becomes as hazy as the sun on the horizon.
Mark Lingane’s Degrade: Tesla Expansion Book 1 is a very smooth read with little to distract one from becoming fully immersed in the plot. I found the atmosphere created was quite real, and had no trouble feeling drawn into this fictional world; the harshness of the environment and threats that came to life were quite compelling. This story also presented shocking revelations in a finely tuned manner that I did not foresee, and in hindsight, they became even more impressive. The characters were all rich and deeply complex, with varying shades of behaviors both past and present. Perhaps Del and Frey were my favorites; teens with attitude that hit the right notes. All told, Degrade is a fine adventure that will carry you off into a new world of uncertainty and leave you breathlessly waiting for the next installment.
