Delilah Versus the Ghastly Grim is an enchanting children's fantasy novel by T.L. McCoy. The story centers around Delilah Monroe, an intelligent twelve-year-old girl with a vivid imagination. Delilah suffers from chronic seizures that often draw ridicule from some of her annoying classmates. After one of her seizures lands her in a medically induced coma, Delilah finds herself transported to the Othersphere, where Nelid, a ladybug, hails her as the traveler from the stories of old. Delilah discovers she is destined to stop the Ghastly Grim from destroying The Hidden. Now, she must protect The Book of Truth from falling into the hands of the Ghastly Grim. After rescuing the dragon Kiarta from an evil sorcerer, Delilah finally faces her nemesis. But she needs help. Will she ever find the indigo door to go back home?
Author T.L. McCoy has written an engrossing fantasy adventure with a lot of heart, whimsy, and charm. It's a story about finding hope and resilience amid adversity and darkness. The narrative features a host of extraordinary creatures in a magical setting that young readers are bound to love. The Othersphere feels truly otherworldly. Yet, it is also very immersive to the reader due to the way McCoy introduces the various factions of magical creatures in the story -- be it the Council of Kangaroos or the Spider Queen Akari and her followers. The characters have distinct personalities that leap off the pages. Delilah is someone you love to root for. She is kind-hearted and strong in ways that truly matter. I particularly enjoyed her dynamic with Samuel. In conclusion, Delilah Versus the Ghastly Grim will entertain young adult and preteen fantasy readers alike.
