Bernadette Rowley’s Wings of Shadow and Prophecy is ideal for readers who love a gripping, atmospheric epic high fantasy with mythical creatures and shapeshifters. As the eldest daughter of Queen Alecia of the Kingdom of Thorius, Princess Iona Zialni is expected to prepare herself for the throne. But the crown of Thorius has never felt like hers. Born with Defender magic simmering in her blood and with the need to discover what she really is, Iona flees the queen's palace. With five young nobles at her side, she sets out on a risky quest to find Melandrach, a hermit living in the high, remote mountains above Selinore. The ancient elven shifter and great magician may be the only one who can help Iona uncover the true power of her gift and fully embrace her Defender heritage. But not every road on their maps leads where it first seems, and they aren't the only ones with a reason to be wandering these treacherous forests. When an unexpected tragedy strikes, Princess Iona and her travel companions are thrust into a desperate battle for survival.
Bernadette Rowley’s Wings of Shadow and Prophecy is compelling, deliciously unpredictable, and masterfully told. In this beautifully woven tale, you are transported to a world where magic is real, and tales that sound like myth and legend become something bigger and stranger. The characters are nothing short of stunning, and the fights and dangers on the road all feel believable and disturbingly real. You can almost hear the unearthly shrieks and troubled screams echoing through the night, and the fear of whatever may be lurking in the shadows. It’s an absorbing edge-of-your-seat adventure, intricate and thrilling. There’s constant danger as shifters and larger-than-life mythological beasts awaken from the ashes of long-forgotten myth. I loved the action, intrigue, and gripping suspense, and I can’t wait for the second book of the Shadow Wing Quest Trilogy to arrive.
