Diary of a Death Doula: 25 Lessons the Dying Teach Us About the Afterlife by Debra Diamond Ph.D. is a first-hand account of what she experiences as a volunteer death doula for hospice, as well as what she encounters as a psychic medium. Diamond leads us on a journey of 25 lessons that instill within us a piece of what the physically dying encounter. The narrative is gentle, yet eloquent. As the reader, you feel completely informed of every step that is taken by her and that is also taken by the patients in the process of leaving their physical bodies. One of the sentences that affected me the most was on page 42: “Death teaches us many things; about the meaning of human existence; the importance of being present; and to take the time to care.”

Diary of a Death Doula by Debra Diamond Ph.D. felt for me like destiny fulfilled. She writes in such a way that any last particle of fear of death is whisked away. I connected immediately with Diary of a Death Doula on so many levels from the soft-spoken narrative, as though she’s reading to you at your own bedside. Then to her ability to reach out and affect you with her experiences, and that of her patients. For me, every word of her patients echoed, reaffirming what I experienced myself. I feel that Debra Diamond’s Diary of a Death Doula is a book that everyone should read. I also feel hospitals and hospices would do well to have copies placed in their libraries, rooms, and waiting areas. Diary of a Death Doula may have “death” in the title, but it is the most life-affirming book you will ever read.
