David Bozza’s Still and Remain follows Dutch craftsman David Janssen as he arrives in the Spanish kingdom of Ungido in 1441 with his parents, Elias and Anna, after King Ramiro de Montoro invites Elias to help expand the Great Cathedral. David soon meets Princess Isabella, Ramiro’s daughter and heir, whose visits to the cathedral bring her into the world of stonework that has shaped his family for generations. As their friendship begins crossing the boundaries of court life, David learns that Ungido carries warnings connected to the northern forest, where abandoned roads and boundary stones remain surrounded by stories few residents will explain. With expectations gathering around Isabella and unease spreading beyond the city, David finds his life drawn into a kingdom where his feelings for Isabella are becoming harder to ignore as those warnings press closer.

David Bozza’s Still and Remain is a fantastic Christian historical fantasy, and David is a protagonist we genuinely want to root for. He is brilliantly fleshed out as a craftsman who takes pride in his skill, which comes through when he finds a cathedral foundation line two fingers inward and has the trench corrected before stone is laid. The prose has a wonderful ear for dialogue, with Queen Beatriz dryly answering Isabella’s comparison to the Royal Steward with, “It sounded more convincing when I thought it.” Where the writing truly shines is in the settings, from David’s limestone courtyard with rosemary drifting over the walls, to the queen’s enclosed garden where orange trees grow beside a fountain running beneath three low arches. Well written and imaginative, readers who enjoy Christian historical fantasy with romance will adore this book.
