Dino Breaks a Tooth by Mary Esparza-Vela is a children's book that educates young readers on the benefits of proper oral hygiene and seeing a dentist regularly. The Luv-Beams are three caring child aliens, as sweet on the outside as they are on the inside. The author tells us they are all about love, with heart-shaped hands, feet, and hoods. On a walk to their grandmother's house, Kyzzie, Sweetz, and Hunee come across Dino, an unfortunate baby dinosaur crying over a toothache. Luckily, the three good little Samaritans have a toothbrush and toothpaste in their backpacks, and show Dino how to brush his teeth and encourage him to ask his mom to take him to the dentist.
Dino Breaks a Tooth by Mary Esparza-Vela is a wonderful little book for children who might be afraid to see the dentist. They tell Dino, “We love our dentist. He showed us how to take care of our teeth and keep them healthy..." Espousing all the great work the dentist can do, the Luv-Beams are sure to help make an upcoming appointment less scary. In fact, it might even make kids excited to go! I really enjoyed the creativity Esparza-Vela has implemented in her work with regards to using tiny aliens and dinosaurs. The illustrations are colorful and fun, bringing to life a new world and a set of characters that children will begin to recognize in Esparza-Vela's other books, and surely grow to love. Dino Breaks a Tooth should be a staple in every dental practise that works with children.
