“Clever and sly./ I do sneak by./ All while you sleep./ I won’t make a peep.” Do you know some or all of the animals that survive in the desert? In Jesica Nkouaga’s Down in the Desert, there are many unique and fascinating animals and plants that live in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, the Tohono Chul Botanical Gardens, and the Sabino Canyon. There’s the roadrunner, the yucca, collard lizards, and many other interesting animals. There’s also the plant life, like the palo verdes and the prickly pears that grow on cacti. Add the numbers and you have a counting book about a versatile landscape.

Jesica Nkouaga’s picture book, Down in the Desert: A Rhyming and Counting Story with Alliteration, is an interactive children’s picture book. This is a great resource for toddlers, preschool children, and kindergarteners. Told in rhyming verse, the story follows the first ten numbers to enhance the counting skills of young readers. The language is simple so young early readers can improve their reading skills. The illustrations are subtle and cute to interest young readers in the animals and plants of the desert, bringing the number game and teaching repertoire to life. It’s a magical journey through the desert, and children will learn to appreciate nature as they follow the lyricism of the rhyming verse. The end of the book includes some fun facts about the creatures and plant life presented in the book. Also included are questions for discussion and some timely and inspirational nature quotes. This is a great resource and a fun read.
