Although wary of the deal, Reaner agrees, mainly because the amount offered is more than he makes in a month, and he desperately needs the money. Unknown to Reaner, Brean has secret, ominous plans. As father and daughter try out Brean’s tech, they’re about to be pushed to their absolute limits. If you are looking for a young adult gamelit novel flavored with sci-fi, action, adventure, psychological thrills, a hint of drama, and suspense, Dream Scape by Randy Speith is a must-read. Right from the start, Speith wastes no time introducing me to the characters and their precarious circumstances. The narration moves at a steady pace. The vivid imagery brought the story’s setting to life on the pages. I could see the changing landscapes in the game and its characters. Fans of movies such as Jumanji and A Minecraft Movie will love this read. As I followed father and daughter learning the game’s rules and history, navigating the difficult missions, and Brean trying to stitch together his unraveling plan, I enjoyed the tension, high stakes, and unpredictability. Speith uses the story to highlight the constructive and destructive power of artificial intelligence. The ending suggests this is just the beginning of Reaner, Tealy, and the gaming AI’s story. I loved it and can’t wait to read more about them.
