Carolyn Dismuke grabs readers' attention with the title of her book Drink Your Words: Discovering California’s Other Wine Regions. This guidebook is a resource describing unique California spots specializing in wineries, on trips worth taking. Reflecting on her background of European travel smarts and vivid family life, she relates memories like a picnic at Golden Gate Park where a goose attacked her mother’s bright yellow pants. The book covers the entire state from Sacramento and San Francisco (her roots) to Los Angeles and San Diego. Along with big and smaller wineries, the author describes the colorful characters she met along the way. Her imagery will not disappear from your mind quickly. Traveling in her roadster, she relays experiences of wine, wineries, and life on the road.
Despite not being a serious sommelier, I still lapped up Drink Your Words. Having toured California wine country and having loved the movie Sideways, which is all about wine, I appreciated Carolyn Dismuke’s journey and journaling. Learning about wine never gets stale, what with so many different varieties. This is the kind of book you’ll treasure as much as a good drop. As an oenophile or wine drinker myself, the rich descriptions of wines made me want a glass of chardonnay or rose. The colorful characters and the settings, from “Fog City” (San Francisco) and south were vivid. Not only did I learn more about wine, the grapevines producing chardonnay to zinfandel (two personal favorites), but also pairing wine with exotic food. Cheers to a fun read. Salut!
