Escape by Caroline Robertson recounts the emotional upheaval a parent feels at the loss of a child. Eileen not only lost her daughter but also her marriage, as her husband could not deal with the passing of their young child. Friends she had made during her daughter’s hospital stay encouraged Eileen to get away from the morbidity that surrounded her at home, so she took a holiday to an island. Here, Eileen allows herself to get in touch with the deep emotions she is pushing aside, some of which are revived by the encounters she has. Liam and Grayson contribute to her getting back in touch with herself, tapping into yearnings and feelings that Eileen had not allowed herself to feel and analyze. A near disaster brings Eileen to the realization that life goes on and is all about choice. And the choices made can lead to happiness.

Escape is simply and succinctly written. Most of the sentences are short and to the point, matching the stop-start feelings of the main character, Eileen. Caroline Robertson captures the repressed emotions of someone who has been through the greatest fear a parent could live through – the loss of a child. Each character woven into the story brings value to Eileen’s life, and her experiences are wonderfully captured. Emotions such as confusion, anger, irritation, frustration, and more are easily picked up, and I could feel the depression depicted at various points. There are some delightful twists and turns, and some surprising events, all of which contribute to a believable, easy read.
