Queer Justice by Alex Charns is a historical legal novel that blends fiction with real figures and events from the turbulent political climate of the 1960s. The story centers on a young attorney, Mitch Pilsudski, who is assigned to represent George Smith, a teenage defendant facing serious criminal charges. During their first meeting, George makes a startling claim involving Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas, setting off a chain of events that reaches the highest levels of government. As Mitch and his investigator, Carlyle “Cake” Entwistle, try to uncover the truth, they navigate a world of political influence, secrecy, and institutional power. The novel explores the experiences of LGBTQ individuals during a period when discrimination and persecution were widespread, while also examining the relationship among the FBI, the Supreme Court, and the White House. As the investigation unfolds, questions of loyalty, justice, privacy, and personal identity drive the story forward.

Alex Charns writes at a brisk pace that keeps the narrative moving through courtrooms, government offices, hotel corridors, and political backrooms. The novel makes effective use of historical detail, weaving real events and public figures into a fictional framework that feels believable. Characterization is one of the book’s strengths, particularly in the contrasting personalities of Mitch, Cake, George, and the powerful officials who influence events from behind the scenes. Humor, irony, and tension are balanced throughout the narrative, preventing the subject matter from becoming overly heavy while still maintaining its seriousness. The period setting is vividly conveyed through cultural references, political concerns, and social attitudes that shape the characters’ lives. Queer Justice is both an entertaining novel and a thoughtful examination of power, prejudice, and the search for truth within institutions that often operate beyond public view. It's worthy of more than 5 stars.
