J. Andrew Shelley's Estate: Golden Rules tackles a topic most of us put off until it's the last minute or too late. Shelley opens with the real cost of a bad goodbye, from the billions spent on funerals each year to the months or years families lose fighting through probate court. From there, he lays out his central idea, the Golden Rules of Estates. It walks through health directives, wills, trusts, and the practical steps of building a personal Transition Book, backed by thousands of years of wisdom on the Golden Rules of Life, from Confucius to Jesus to Hillel the Elder. Threaded through the chapters is the story of Rhea, handed the job of executor without warning, whose fictional journey gives all this advice a human face.
J. Andrew Shelley writes with clear intention: learn from his family’s messy mistake after his grandmother died, and this honesty carries through every chapter. The pace is brisk and conversational, mixing hard probate numbers with centuries-old quotes and small stories. Readers are introduced to AI prompts for their own estate rules and letter templates for hard family conversations. Rhea's ghost story in the appendix is a clever way to close the book, and I found myself wanting to see how her story ended. A few sections reach further into current cultural debates than the topic really needs, but the author always circles back to his real message: plan now, and give your family a heartfelt goodbye instead of a fight. This book is good for parents and grandparents, especially those with significant assets to leave in their passing.
