Fenceline and Other Stories is written by Jeremy Sayers. He has compiled actual tales and facts from his family’s history, repeated from generation to generation. In Fenceline, Henry Jenkins spends a harsh winter alone in a remote line shack on his employer’s ranch. He is out of food, firewood, and ammunition; wolves lurk nearby while he struggles to help a cow who has difficulty delivering her calf. The story, In Another Winter, has Henry remembering the horror when he accidentally shot his brother Charley, and had to fetch the doctor who was very high on morphine at the time. A Love for Bucks is what robbers have when they steal the payroll, but they did not expect anyone to track them.

Jeremy Sayers has given good insights into a past era with Fenceline and Other Stories. He has written an interesting account of the lifestyles of his family, who were farmers, blacksmiths, coal miners and cowboys. His paternal family came to America in 1715, while his mother’s family arrived sometime later. Jeremy Sayers writes with feeling as he brings his stories to life, recollecting some activities of his ancestors. It is obvious from reading that life in this historical period was not easy, lacking the amenities today’s generation have taken for granted, but from all indications of the author’s writing, life was still enjoyable. Each of the eleven stories introduces different characters in various settings, but they are still connected and contain significant drama, good dialogue and wit.
