Bones: A Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Brian Doe follows Brom Bones three years after Ichabod Crane’s disappearance, when life has become far from the victory he thought he'd won. His marriage to Katrina is strained, his home is full of tension, and he’s too wrapped up in his own misery to see how unhappy she is. When strange things begin happening around the farm, Brom starts to realize someone may know more about that night than he ever expected. Aucker Van Acker, a nervous teenager who has kept a heavy secret for years, is struggling with nightmares and guilt he can’t shake. As the quiet valley grows more unsettling, Brom finds himself facing a fear he can’t outrun. Bones is a dark story that brings the Sleepy Hollow legend back to life with a focus on guilt, superstition, and the trouble that comes when secrets refuse to stay hidden.

I enjoy books based on the Sleepy Hollow legend, and this one takes the story in a different direction. Bones by Brian Doe has a steady pace, with short chapters that make it easy to stay engaged as the story grows more unsettling. The writing creates a clear sense of discomfort around Brom’s everyday life, and the author uses the setting well to build that feeling without slowing the story down. The characters are well written, and Aucker Van Acker’s scenes bring a clear change in mood whenever he appears. Brom’s chapters show how the story closes in around him bit by bit, and the tension at home fits the tone without taking over. The pacing is steady, and the chapters move smoothly, keeping the focus on how the story develops rather than rushing the darker moments. It’s a solid continuation of the legend and offers a straightforward, atmospheric read for anyone who enjoys the many stories of Sleepy Hollow.
