In Fighting Edge by Margaret Mizushima, Deputy Mattie Walker and her K-9 partner, Robo, are called to a crime scene. They discover a young mother dead on the couch. The mother’s two-year-old daughter, Emma, is found crying in her crib, and she bonds with Mattie. After stopping a speeding vehicle, Mattie suspects that the nervous driver is involved in human trafficking. Robo’s discovery of drugs hidden inside the car’s spare tire gives Mattie grounds to arrest him while allowing her to protect the frightened teenager accompanying him. Mattie’s investigation soon reveals that the murdered mother had herself been a trafficking victim who had escaped and rebuilt her life in Colorado. As Mattie follows the increasingly disturbing evidence, she discovers indications that organized crime may have established a foothold in the normally quiet community of Timber Creek.

The action in Fighting Edge: A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery by Margaret Mizushima starts at the beginning and never lets up. I was hooked from the start and could not turn the pages fast enough. The story was fast-paced, and I could not put the book down. I had to know what would happen next. The characters are believable, and I could relate to Mattie. K-9 Robo is intelligent and loyal. Mattie and Robo make an excellent team and always get the evidence they need. I felt empathy for the characters as they went through all the drama. The story was brilliantly written and has all the qualities needed for a thriller in a police setting. I enjoyed reading this book, and it exceeded my expectations. I could not have wished for a better ending.
