Kids and COVID by Dr. Elizabeth Mumper, MD, examines how pandemic policy affected children by asking who should decide what medical risks a child takes. Mumper argues that COVID vaccination recommendations should account for age because healthy children faced a low risk of the virus. She uses cases such as Maddie de Garay, who became disabled after participating in Pfizer’s pediatric trial, to examine how adverse events were recorded. Dr. Renata Moon’s testimony about blank vaccine package inserts asks whether parents received the information required for informed consent. Mumper also considers the influence of Dr. Anthony Fauci on public messaging during the pandemic. The book presents parental authority as central to pediatric medicine, with physicians supplying information so families can make decisions based on each child’s circumstances.
Dr. Elizabeth Mumper’s Kids and COVID brings a seasoned pediatrician’s voice to children’s health during the pandemic years, giving parents a thoughtful medical self-help guide for future health emergencies. I think it's pretty clear that the pandemic totally changed how families relate to medicine, and I appreciate having a resource that says where things could have been better. The writing is conversational with information designed for everyday family life. I felt like I was being informed, but not spoken down to. There are heaps of daily advice too, like serving unprocessed foods at home and setting aside time for active play. Mumper does, as my daughter would say, keep the receipts, and backs up her work with decades of clinical pediatric experience, supported by hundreds of medical sources. Parents of babies to teenagers seeking a pediatrician’s perspective on post-pandemic and preventative medicine, and how things could stand should there be another, will benefit most. Very highly recommended.
