Find Sam by Debbie Ann Ice is the heartwarming tale of a missing dog and the growing search to find him as a dog walker must decide if she should tell the truth. Marcy is an overly curious dog walker that makes one very big mistake. When out during a storm with the dogs, one of them disappears but if she tells the truth about where he took off, she’ll have to confess just what she was up to during that time. She makes up a story, but she doesn’t expect the search to become a media frenzy or for a dog detective to be called into the case. With the line of questioning thrown her way, Marcy is starting to feel the heat while everyone takes part in tracking down the dog’s whereabouts.
The story weaves between Marcy’s perspective as the search for Sam gains traction and Sam’s perspective as he embarks on his own adventure. Debbie Ann Ice uses an interesting structure as in the third person the search for Sam escalates to media appearances and, in the first person, the engaging thought process of a runaway dog is explored. Marcy’s journey consists of facing her mistakes, the curiosity that gets her into trouble, her family life, and the lies she’s told to keep herself out of trouble. Ice delves into Marcy’s emotional journey as she is torn between keeping her secret and the guilt at having lost Sam to begin with. Ice has clear fun with Sam’s journey from house pet to a wild dog as he treks through mud and steals food from “donation boxes.” He has a blunt personality that has found a sense of freedom and adventure on his journey that has humor, danger, and some fun antics.
The story explores social media and the spotlight while hitting upon a deeper level of what it means to be a good person. Find Sam has two engaging voices that provide a balance of humor and heart with an emotional journey and a thought-provoking view on life and existence through the journey of a small dog and the search to find him. A story for mystery fans and dog lovers.
