Flare by Jonathan Weldon Maas is about the time when the earth will be scorched raw by the rays of the sun and the human race will be all but extinct. The days are deadly and hard, but the nights are cold, dark and menacing. There is nothing that can save you from the sun and you must take shelter. There is one place that is said to be safe from the devastation of the sun. It’s a safe haven that is sought by two different men who have the same goal: survival.
Zeke is a wandering spirit. He never settles in one location and keeps on moving from one place to another. When he saves the life of an old man, he gives him a tent so that he can stay outdoors and still be safe. He learns about a place called Salvation where he would be safe forever. Now, that is his mission, another place to wander to. Ash and his sister Heather barely survived the flare and now they too are outside, seeking refuge against the deadly sun. They meet people who tell them about a place where life is capable of surviving. Together they search for the place, but other surviving humans are not accommodating and civilized. They have to fight for their right to live.
Flare by Jonathan Weldon Maas is a post-apocalyptic novel that is terrifyingly good. Yes, it is depressing, but it is so good. The characters are well formed and written beautifully. The dialogues were complete and revealed a little something about each character’s personality. The fluency of the writing was amazing. A fair warning: no sugar coating here. It is raw reality spoken bluntly. I loved it and it was great.
