Flash the Firefly is a children’s book written by Derrick Philip Begin and illustrated by Nguyen Thi Kieu Diem. The darkness of night is Flash the Firefly’s favorite time, as he can glow and make everything shine. His friends, Zig-Zag and Zippy, have their own tricks. Blip is Flash’s best friend. Together, Flash, Zig-Zag, Zippy and Blip play many firefly games which make them laugh and have lots of fun. When Flash’s birthday arrives one rainy night, however, none of his friends are to be found. He searches high and low for them, almost getting swallowed up by a spider’s web, but flies back home alone, sad to be without his friends on his birthday. When the clouds clear and the moon shines through, Flash looks into the sky and gets the most amazing surprise, and finally understands why his friends were nowhere near.

I found Flash the Firefly to be a fun story for children. The illustrations were very creative and colorful, bringing the story to life beautifully. The story shows the importance of friendship and that there is usually at least one best friend within a friendship circle. Derrick Phillip Begin’s story is one to bring a smile to any child’s face. Flash the Firefly would be a wonderful book for home and kindergarten libraries, to be read aloud at story time or bed time. I enjoyed reading about Flash’s birthday adventure and look forward to more from this author in the future.
