It is disturbing when the people we entrust with our safety, whether family members or close friends, actively or passively participate in the abuse, or situations that leave us traumatized. This can also be confusing, especially to a child. Apart from not knowing how to react, such situations often leave them scarred, shaping their personalities and impacting how they interact with the world. And while it is not their fault that they go through such experiences, what matters most is how they get past them. Skyler Boschen, a survivor of abuse, shares her experiences in Flickering Lights: A Memoir of Rebuilding A Shattered Past, detailing how she pulled through it all. She was not only subjected to sexual abuse as a toddler, but also to bullying, sextortion, and rape through her transition from elementary school through high school to campus.

Using personal journal entries, anecdotes, police reports, Title IX investigation papers, and transcripts of direct and text messages, Boschen gives a raw account of the abuse she has endured throughout her young life. Born in the early 2000s, her story is relatable to the younger generation and offers invaluable insight into how to deal with abuse. Every detail of her abuse broke my heart, seeing that she is a good person at heart, and the world was taking advantage of her naivety and caring nature. She reveals the reality about teenage and campus friendships, most of which are fragile alliances driven by social pressure, immaturity, and self-preservation. The justice system lacks proportional punishment for perpetrators of abuse and subjects victims to exhausting processes during reporting, which are both invasive and re-traumatizing. Flickering Lights by Skyler Boschen is a must-read for survivors of abuse, their families and friends, and mental health advocates.
