In Grave Affairs, an urban fantasy tale by Lilith Daniels, Detective Kirani Kinsley Ramons has turned in her badge. An accusation of necromancy and no way of proving she didn’t do it has left her fleeing for a fresh start in Dragon Heights, Wyoming. The thing is, she isn’t a necromancer. She is a dragon descendant but few in Miami see the difference. In Dragon Heights, Kirani has her work cut out. With the hunt on for the next dragon in town, it doesn’t take long for her to fit in; she can hide herself and her skills. But when would-be dragons start to get killed off and the local brothel comes under attack, she has no choice but to face her past. Should she hunt down the hunter to save her friends? With her kitten as a sidekick, she starts her investigations, and what she uncovers could change things forever.

Grave Affairs by Lilith Daniels is an amazing story, truly unique, and with an action-packed plot that leaves you breathless at every turn. This is a story with a real difference and a writing style that takes a bit of getting used to but is easy to follow, nonetheless. The story revolves around a very strong female lead, a smart woman who thinks nothing of helping others and whom you’ll come to know very well. The rest of the characters are equally well developed and you’ll enjoy getting to know them, too. This is a fun read, compellingly written to keep you reading all the way through, and you’ll love the little Carbunclo kitten, too. The world-building is second to none, and I’m hoping the sudden ending is a cliffhanger for another book. Thoroughly enjoyable story.

In a world where dragon shapeshifters co-habit with humans, it is not unusual to come across dragon-kin, descendants of dragons who are yet to shift. Kinsley Ramons is one of them, although she doesn’t want to reveal her ancestry. When her unique powers raise more than a few eyebrows, earning her the accusation of being a necromancer, she is forced to leave her job as a cop in Miami. What hurts her more, however, is the unavoidable separation from Eric, her fiancé. After fleeing to Dragon Heights, Kinsley vows to live an anonymous life, but the arrival of a rare carbunclo kitten throws her plans off track. With someone targeting the brothel women and murdering the dragon-kin pilgrims, she realizes her abilities might be just the key to solving the mystery. To discover if she succeeds, pick up Grave Affairs by Lilith Daniels.

My favorite aspect of this book is the strong female lead. With her feisty nature concealing a kind heart, I found Kinsley to be a perfect role model. Her stubborn refusal to accept her dragon ancestry reflected her desire to excel on her own merit. Her devotion to her pets and affection for stray animals make her unique among the dragons. Garnet, the precious, magical carbunclo kitten, stole my heart with its adorable charm and hilarious antics. Daniels devoted much of the narrative to portraying the unbreakable bond between Kinsley and Garnet, thus filling the plot with a warm, cozy vibe. The world-building was intriguing as the author never divulged too much information at a time, keeping readers guessing until the end. I loved the inside scoops from the dragon world, brimming with numerous factions, each with their idiosyncrasies and special abilities. The hilarious interactions between Kinsley and her parents added to the feel-good vibes, offsetting the befuddling mystery. I recommend Grave Affairs to anyone who loves paranormal mystery or urban fantasy.

Lilith Daniel's Grave Affairs, the inaugural book in her urban fantasy series, masterfully combines mystery, magic, and myth, delivering an engaging and electrifying read. At its core, this is the tale of Detective Kirani Kinsley Ramons, a character both compelling and complex. Accused of necromancy and fleeing from her past, Kinsley’s move to Dragon Heights, Wyoming, offers her a fresh start, though the peace she seeks remains elusive. The story’s progression is marked by a series of mysterious attacks on local brothel workers and dragon-kin, pulling Kinsley back into the world she sought to leave behind.

Kinsley's character is a highlight of the novel. As a protagonist, she is resilient and resourceful, and her struggles with her identity and her past make her deeply relatable. The inhabitants of Dragon Heights, from dragon-kin to quirky locals, are vividly drawn and add richness to the story. The relationship between Kinsley and her magical carbunclo kitten provides a touch of warmth and charm amidst the darker themes. For fans of urban fantasy, Grave Affairs offers a unique setting where magic and everyday life intertwine seamlessly. Lilith Daniel’s world-building is exceptional, painting Dragon Heights as a place teeming with supernatural intrigue and atmospheric beauty. The frequent rain and the constant tension between humans and dragon-kin add to the narrative’s immersive quality. This should definitely be on everyone’s summer reading list. It will have many fans wondering when Lilith Daniel will come out with the next book in this series.

Grave Affairs is a work of fiction in the urban fantasy, adventure, and action genres and is penned by author Lilith Daniels. The plot follows Detective Kirani Kinsley Ramons, accused of necromancy, as she flees to Dragon Heights, Wyoming. In this town where the distinction between necromancers and dragon descendants is blurred, Kinsley finds solace in anonymity. However, when the local brothel workers are targeted, and bodies of aspiring dragons surface, Kinsley must confront her past and uncover the truth to protect her new community. With her loyal carbunclo kitten by her side, she embarks on a perilous journey into the world of dragons, facing unforeseen challenges that may alter her fate forever.

Author Lilith Daniels uses creativity and imagination to craft an exhilarating journey into a world where magic and mystery intertwine. I was really impressed by the attention to detail in the world-building and intricate plot crafting, which worked hand in hand to deliver deeper details and more atmospheric insight into the magical lore underpinning this urban adventure tale. Detective Ramons' character is a brilliantly developed central figure, whose attitudes fits in well amidst the fusion of supernatural elements with the everyday struggles of urban life. I also really adored the setting of Dragon Heights, with its unique blend of dragon-kin and human residents, which was vividly brought to life in excellent character presentation and descriptive language to create a captivating backdrop for the unfolding mystery. As the plot unraveled and grew in pace and suspense with every satisfying twist, I found myself drawn deeper into the story and rooting for Kinsley all the more. Overall, Grave Affairs is a thrilling blend of fantasy and suspense that I would highly recommend, and I can’t wait to see what the series has in store for us in the future.
