Marq and the Queen Fish by Martha Cinader is about the stunning land of Mara and its beautiful people. However, their homes were stolen one day by Florkers from the inland, and from then on, they claimed everything was theirs. Years passed, and the poor Marans were subject to unfair treatment. All the rules seemed to go against them and made them pay more than they could earn. Marq, a young Maran, already upset and frustrated with his absent father, felt that he needed to do something to change their unfair situation, but his mother constantly told him to be patient and that it was almost time. He kept hearing from several Marans that “it was almost time,” but time for what? If he can’t do anything now, then when? As his feelings and frustrations were building up, he was suddenly imprisoned for breaking the rules. Find out more in Marq and the Queen Fish.
Martha Cinader’s Marq and the Queen Fish is refreshing, unique, and well-written. I have never read anything like this before, and it really piqued my interest. I read the book in one sitting. Every description of the sea made me miss my childhood moments of playing by the sea. It made me appreciate the beauty of marine life as well. Reading made me want to visit Mara and see the captivating beauty that was so perfectly described. I absolutely loved Marq; his frustrations and anger were relatable, and every time he lost his cool, I understood why. He was strong and compassionate. Another character that I adored was Stewart. He showed what true bravery really is, and he was a good judge of character. A fun read, and I wished there was more. Overall, it was truly wonderful.
