Forbidden Captive by Ashley Earley is a well-written novel about Riker and Zyra, two people from different sides of a brutal, age-old conflict. Zyra is a strong shapeshifter who takes the form of a wolf, while Riker is a Viking prince who has been accused of betraying his people and killing his sister. Riker runs away from his home and family and tries to seek refuge with the Waylrians, with the intention of revealing the evil plans his father has against them. Riker believes this would earn him their trust and would enable him to save his family from his father's ruthless rule. Along the way, he is captured by Zyra, who sees him as a threat due to their conflicted history. The fate of the Waylrians now lies in Riker's ability to prove his honest intentions to expose his father's plan and save them.
I really enjoyed this book. It is full of plot twists, tension, and strong conversations between characters that grounded the story and made it more engaging. Although Zyra and Riker were from entirely different worlds and had different beliefs and sentiments toward each other, there were lots of things that made them alike. What made them even more human was how they began to question everything they believed and were taught. The writing style is very detailed, showing the inner struggles among the characters, especially Riker and Zyra. Zyra was treated like an outcast due to her wolf heritage, which her people believe is a curse. I was captivated by her determination to prove herself worthy, and I kept wishing she could stop feeling bad about what people thought about her. The characters were well developed, making it a great read. The romance was lovely. It reminds me of Romeo and Juliet and makes me wonder if their love is going to change history. I recommend Forbidden Captive by Ashley Earley to readers who enjoy fantasy novels with lots of action, suspense, and romance.
