From The Ashes: A Kingdom of Beasts & Starlight by R.C. Perry is set in the City of Stars, where desperation and destiny intertwine. Remmy, a twenty-five-year-old woman who is struggling to survive, is driven to take on a dangerous quest that will change her life forever. With nothing left to lose, she sets out in a bid to rescue Prince Sterling of Valeria. Sterling is a Fae prince and the rightful heir to the throne who lives under the oppressive control of his father. After being kidnapped and imprisoned on a mountain overrun by monstrous forces, Sterling’s fate seems sealed until Remmy becomes his one chance at freedom. What begins as a mission for survival and reward soon grows into something more as Remmy and Sterling are forced to rely on each other.
From The Ashes by R.C. Perry is the kind of book I can’t seem to put down once I start reading it. Remmy is a strong female lead who goes against the odds to ensure a better future for herself and her family. She is such a compelling and relatable protagonist, and I enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the book. I found the writing style to be very emotionally engaging, especially with it focusing on Remmy’s internal thoughts and experiences, making her journey feel personal and immersive. The pacing leans more toward character development than fast-moving action, but I think that works in the book’s favor, as it allows the reader to fully understand the weight of each decision made. I appreciated how the story gradually builds its world without overwhelming the reader. Overall, I found From The Ashes both gripping and thought-provoking, and I would definitely recommend it to any lover of fantasy.
