Shadows Among the Peaks (The Shephard Chronicles Book 1) by R.D. Smithson is a modern-day story of the fight against institutional corruption and cartels in Mexico. When a well-respected and lauded not-for-profit organization that focuses on uplifting children’s lives in education, welfare, and food security is suspected of being a front for child exploitation and trafficking, the powers-that-be move quickly to shield the Carrington Foundation from any possibility of suspicion. High in the Sierra Madre mountains, in an obscure little village called Valle Oscuro, one man is making an immense difference in the minds and hearts of the villagers who have long trembled under the yoke of a repressive and violent criminal gang controlled by the wealthy and entrenched political scions in Mexico City. Eli Shepard brings more than his fighting prowess to Valle Oscuro; he brings something that has been sadly lacking for a long time: he brings hope. The courage of Diego, a young boy, and the other villagers will be rediscovered and ultimately shine as they adopt Eli’s mantra of rebellion – small, defiant acts of courage and people with hope in their hearts are ultimately unstoppable.

Shadow Among the Peaks is R.D. Smithson’s debut novel, and it is a resounding success. The writing style is descriptive and extremely well developed, carrying readers, with Eli, into that tiny village and conveying the palpable fear felt by the villagers. The character development is deep and meaningful, giving readers great insight into the psyches of the leading players. Eli Shephard’s deep faith and his desire to bring peace and goodwill to the villagers were also allied with his prowess as a fighting man who could dispense justice swiftly and fiercely. I know this is listed as Christian fiction, but this is a very minor part of the actual story and adds to it, rather than detracts from it, although it is clear that faith does underline the actions of Eli and the villagers. Ultimately, this is much more a book about hope, redemption, and the ability of the ordinary man to stand up against the bully, whether in the form of an individual or an organization. As this is Book 1, I am sure there is more from Eli Shephard and his mission to save people, especially children, from the horrors of modern-day slavery, drug cartels, and sex trafficking. I look forward to the next book. This is a fantastically exciting and fast-moving story that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

In R.D. Smithson’s Shadows Among The Peaks, Eli Shephard enters the isolated mountain village of Valle Oscuro after learning that armed commander Rafael Lucero controls the community through fear tied to a hidden trafficking route moving through northern Mexico. While villagers remain silent to protect their families, Eli begins working quietly with Diego, a boy searching for his missing sister Rosa, after uncovering evidence that children from the region are being transported through cartel compounds connected to powerful figures operating far beyond the village itself. As Rafael tightens his grip through public punishment and violent retaliation, Eli trains the villagers to resist in secret while gathering proof linking the operation to wealthy humanitarian leader James Aldridge. With armed patrols closing in across Valle Oscuro, Eli pushes deeper into cartel territory, knowing that every decision could determine whether the village survives long enough to reclaim control of its future.

R.D. Smithson’s Shadows Among The Peaks is a really well executed Christian literary novel, and Eli is a protagonist we want to root for, especially when he falls into his own brand of patient leadership. Smithson fleshed him out as someone willing to take risks, teaching others to predict patrol routes and carrying a wounded teenager, quite literally, through forest gunfire. Rafael is a brilliantly diabolical antagonist, and Smithson is bang-on in his driving of fear in every public display, ready to execute punishment, and even death, to hesitant soldiers and frightened residents. I love how the author immerses readers in the landscapes, from a mountain cave sanctuary with twisting stone corridors and narrow shafts of silver daylight, to ruined chapel courtyards beneath storm clouds and above Valle Oscuro. Smithson begins each chapter with a perfectly suited line of scripture, and the story's Christian identity shines through in Eli’s belief that every person has God-given value. Readers seeking faith driven resistance fiction will adore this book, and I'm looking forward to seeing where Smithson takes us next. Very highly recommended.

In Shadows Among the Peaks by R.D. Smithson, Eli Shepard is a man with a mission. The remote mountain village of Valle Oscuro in the Sierra Madre Oriental in northeast Mexico is hunkered down under the jackboots of militias. But these are just the cartel enforcers, because their strings are being pulled from far away. In northern cities - in Maryland mansions, Washington offices, and even on Capitol Hill - philanthropic foundations, busy newsrooms, and senators provide the cover for unspeakable crimes against the innocent. But that’s about to change. Eli’s appearance in the village is the spark that ignites hope and defiance. As the villagers unite to defend themselves and take back their home, cracks appear in the edifice of control all the way to the top. Everyone will have to choose which side they stand on.

“Courage doesn’t mean you’re not afraid. It means you act anyway.” Shadows Among The Peaks is a story for readers who need to remind themselves of this fact. This gripping tale is Book 1 of The Shephard Chronicles by R.D. Smithson, but it can be read as a standalone. Eli Shepard is an intriguing character whose faith is the foundation for courage rather than a battering ram to enforce compliance. The characters are true to life, sketched with quick strokes in the midst of the action. The villagers, slowly awakening to their true selves, are truly inspiring, and their lives and stories are sympathetically told. Recommended especially for readers who enjoy action and dramatic tales, as well as travel and international adventure.

R.D. Smithson’s Shadows Among The Peaks drops readers into Valle Oscuro, a mountain village where silence keeps people alive and Rafael Lucero rules through fear that stretches far beyond the surrounding cliffs. Outsider Eli Shephard turns up expecting isolation but finds a hidden trafficking operation feeding powerful interests connected to distant cities. After meeting Diego, a boy searching for his missing sister, Eli begins moving through the village carefully, building secret alliances with families forced to survive under Rafael’s control. Each act of resistance pushes Valle Oscuro closer toward open conflict as hidden mountain routes become battlegrounds and frightened civilians seeking safety vanish into the forests. With Rafael tightening his grip through violent retaliation, Eli races to expose the machinery behind the village before Valle Oscuro disappears beneath the same terror controlling it.

R.D. Smithson’s Shadows Among The Peaks builds its identity through the way Valle Oscuro changes once Eli Shephard begins quietly interrupting Rafael Lucero’s grip on the village. The author gives the conflict a very human feel through Diego’s search for his missing sister Rosa because every secret meeting inside the forge offers the hope that another family might finally recover somebody taken by the traffickers. The story is so sad in many ways, but beautiful in how ordinary villagers slowly reclaim the public space that Rafael once ruled through intimidation, especially after Tomas paints a red cross onto the plaza well. People begin recognizing that fear no longer defines every interaction. Eli’s presence is the catalyst, due to his having a strategic mindset, but it is the villagers who have the most to lose. If you like classic resistance fiction rooted in community action and thriving in Mexico, this is your book. Este libro es perfecto!

Shadows Among The Peaks is the first novel in The Shephard Chronicles by R.D. Smithson. The story follows Eli Shephard as he arrives in Valle Oscuro, a forgotten mountain village. Eli is not there to become a hero or start a rebellion against Rafael Lucero, who ruled the village with a tight fist. A quiet man with strong faith, Eli has a strong sense of justice and is determined to stay on the right path. So when he meets Diego and sees how he has more courage than the adults of the village against Rafael Lucero’s men, Eli knows he has to do something. But it is not easy. Rafael controls the village through fear and silence, leaving the people feeling trapped. The more Eli looks, the more evil he finds. Can a single man help the people of Valle Oscuro? Or is it too late for them?

Shadows Among The Peaks is a wonderful story of courage, faith, and fighting for what is right. R.D. Smithson created a very likable character and made sure his readers found pieces of themselves in Eli. Eli is everything a perfect protagonist should be. He is self-aware, has values, and is determined to do something with his abilities. He is not the typical protagonist with a hero complex. He simply took a stance because little Diego did, and he followed through with that example. His growth is perfect, and he is the best example of a well-rounded character. Other than Eli, I really enjoyed Gabe’s character. He was the perfect yang to Eli’s yin. The setting of Valle Oscuro was tense and pretty dark; the descriptions conveyed how the village was run by powerful people, and no one was willing to fight against them because of the consequences. While the story has clear religious themes, it is not too much. It is as important as Eli to the story. Christian themes are woven into the story perfectly. The ending gave me hope that we will see Eli in a new adventure, and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
