From the Depths, They Speak by Jeffrey E. Grove is a historical drama that follows the harrowing journey of the McClaughry family, an Irish family seeking better opportunities in the New World. They purchase tickets to board the ship George and Ann, with a crew led by the experienced Captain Skyvers. What begins as a hopeful journey quickly turns dire when John and one of his sons, Matthew, are left ashore. Only John's daughter Sara, his son Liam, his wife, and their friends, the Clintons, set sail. During the voyage, the passengers endured harsh treatment, imprisonment, disease, and starvation. Sara does her best to care for the sick and documents their horrific experiences in her diary, recording their stories. Many years later, Matthew McClaughry, a descendant of the family, tasks his daughter, Brittney, with uncovering the truth about their lineage during her visit to Dublin. This quest aims to bring closure to a chapter of their family's history that has long been shrouded in mystery.
From the Depths, They Speak is a captivating story that emphasizes the importance of family roots and bravery in the face of danger. While the narrative is mainly told from Sara’s perspective, it also follows Brittney’s journey, highlighting the deep connections of family ties and bloodlines. Sara is a brave girl who confronts injustice and survives against all odds to reveal the truth about a man who was celebrated by many yet had a dark heart. Jeffrey E. Grove addresses themes such as xenophobia, greed, forced labour, slavery, and the neglect of human life. He portrays the brutal realities faced by many aboard what were known as coffin ships and the emotional struggles of their passengers. Despite the dark themes, the story also contains lighthearted moments of Irish bar humor and empowering instances that inspire hope and resilience. Overall, this is a compelling tale of heritage and endurance amidst unimaginable hardship.
