Girl in a Golden Cage is a splendid entry into the Gold Gift Series by Lucy Branch, a story with a strong, relatable protagonist. Francesca Milliardo is set for a promising future in the contemporary art world and she has succeeded in creating great connections that can help make her dream come true. Her visit to Italy from the UK plunges her into mysterious happenings that could change the course of her life. While in her father’s mansion in Milan, she starts experiencing something very mysterious. The world of art and the wonderful experience in Milan could have been very soothing to her, but the out-of-body experiences leave her with many more questions than answers. Can she discover the truth? Can she survive it?
This is a beautiful story that offers a wonderful blend of the paranormal and mystery, a fast-paced story with a protagonist that will hold the reader’s attention at all times. I enjoyed the beautiful settings and how the author communicates her knowledge of art. The prose is compelling and it is filled with emotional and psychological insights that are as arresting as the characters. Francesca is a complex character and although she has extraordinary experiences, it is not hard for the reader to relate to her. The conflict that animates this story is strong and it is developed at multiple levels. I loved the way the attraction the protagonist has for her father’s gorgeous assistant is presented. Girl in a Golden Cage is a fun read, with great prose elements masterfully integrated into the story. Lucy Branch has created a gripping, easy-to-read story that will have readers captivated and utterly entertained.
